Морского чёрта редко видят вживую, ведь обитают они обычно на глубине от одного до 4 км. Их и в аквариум не посадишь при обычном давлении, а вот с их необычным внешним видом знакомы все: уточки со светящимися приманками, странные формы тела, наросты и жуткие пасти.

Интереснее их стратегия размножения, которую можно назвать сексуальный паразитизм. У многих видов удильщиков рыбы, которые мы встречаем, вот эти вот страшные с удочками - это самки. А их самцы - это карлики. Они прикрепляются к самкам не просто как рыбы-прилипалы, а навсегда.

Сращивается всё с укуса. Когда самец находит самку, он кусает её, но челюсти больше никогда не разжимает. Они буквально растворяются в её теле, а затем он теряет и большую часть своего тела за ненадобностью. Потом самцы, точнее то, что от них остаётся, получают питательные вещества и защиту, а в ответ производят половые клетки и отдают сперму.
