A Hidden Gravel Pit | Port Protection

It's one of the most rewarding things in life to be able to go out to the ocean and not only get our food but food for the docks. Hans and Timby have anchored their skiff at the mouth of a rocky fissure, hoping to scavenge a key ingredient in their homemade duck food: gravel.

"Look at this, Hans!"

"Oh yeah, nice! Inside that little crack, you've got about 4 ft of width, but it goes up about 30 ft before it opens up into the forest floor. It's really quite beautiful. Most of the time, it's covered up by water, so you can't get to it. I love it in here, but this is one place that I wouldn't want to be when the tide comes in."

"No kidding! It's beautiful, but it's kind of frightening."

"Oh, look at this gravel! That's perfect size stuff."

"I know! I am so glad we got here at low tide. I wouldn't want to be here at high tide. And so I guess that's where we got to hustle. I don't want to get stuck in here."

"Yeah, let's do it! Let's get it and get out of here."

Inside that little crack, there turned out to be just the right size gravel that we're looking for—just perfect for the bird's gizzard.

"Wow, Hans, look how much the tide's come in already!"

"Yeah, it has. We better get you getting or we're going to be late."

"Okay, baby, careful on these rocks, H!"

"All right, look how much that crack's filling up already!"

"I know! It comes in quick when it starts coming in."
