Дело в том, что сами ядовитые железы расположены позади глаз, и самый короткий путь получается, когда проток идет напрямую вниз к задней части верхней челюсти.

У некоторых видов в процессе эволюции клыки все больше и больше смещались вперед, что помогало эффективнее ловить и умертвлять жертву. При этом менялись и сами клыки, не только их расположение.

Поначалу это были обычные гладкие зубы, по которым стекал яд. Но со временем у некоторых змей в каждом клыке появился желобок, который направлял поток яда.

У каких-то видов этот желобок становился все глубже и, наконец, превратился в трубку внутри зуба. Такие клыки позволяли впрыскивать яд внутрь добычи.

Но это скорее исключение; клыки с полой трубкой встречаются только у 15 процентов ядовитых змей. Но, естественно, среди тех, что живут в Австралии, таких большинство.
