Вся вода с Марса исчезнуть не могла. Считается, что она до сих пор содержится в виде льда в полярных шапках и неглубоко под слоем реголита, в достаточно глубоких подземных карманах. В очень солёном виде, а также в составе минералов.

В тщательных поисках воды сильно помогают радиолокационные и сейсмологические исследования. Например, станция Инсайт, которая 4 года ощупывает марсианскую кору, предоставила данные о скорости распространения сейсмических волн в средней коре планеты на глубине от 11 до 20 км.

Используя сложные математические модели и геофизические методы, учёные попытались определить, какие породы залегают на этой глубине в радиусе 50 км от станции. Оказалось, что именно наличие жидкой воды в трещинах глубинных магматических пород лучше всего подходит для объяснения полученных результатов. Эти тонкие трещины могли удерживать жидкую воду на протяжении миллиардов лет, не выпуская её в атмосферу.
