Musings from Gary | Port Protection
We in Port Protection are very lucky for the abundance of seafood. Wildlife, most everything we get comes from nature. The waters of Port Protection present a feast to those who know how to catch it. But few take better advantage of her bounty than 36-year fisherman Gary Mulberger.
"I've been eating fish and clams and even octopus, but I'm kind of craving some shrimp right now. It's that time of the year. The weather's a little calmer, so hopefully we'll have a little success there catching some shrimp."
"What happened, driver? I'm not as confident going after the shrimp as I am king salmon fishing, but I'm not afraid to try. I'm just hoping that my luck will carry through and I catch a couple of pounds of spot prawns."
"To catch shrimp, Hans left a couple of shrimp pots in his skiff for me. The shrimp, there they go in these doors, these little openings. They go in through there, and then they can't get back out. You have this part here closed up like so, and you come on over and get a little strain on it there, and there it is. This pot looks pretty good."
"Before I go shrimping, I got to look the pots over. It's always to a person's advantage to check things out ahead of time. Once you're out there, it's hard to accomplish those things. This one here's got a broken weld right here, so that's why you look at stuff."
"See if I can use this stuff to repair that. If I don't fix this, it's possible that this thing could shift a little bit. That stiffens it up, and it just is a good idea to keep them in good repair if you can."
"I have most everything ready. I've ran through all the pots, I coiled up my buoy line, and I should be ready to go in the morning. It sure is a nice day for beer drinking, though."
