Звучит логично, но большинство учёных сходились во мнении, что этому мешает некий физический процесс. В 1926 году описание возможного механизма предложил Ральф Фаулер. Согласно принципу исключения Паули, несколько фермионов, в том числе электронов, не могут одновременно находиться в одном и том же состоянии.

Значит, прижатие вещества, каждый электрон занимает свой небольшой объём пространства. Но по принципу неопределённости Гейзенберга нельзя менно знать и положение, и импульс частицы. Получается, что чем меньше места остаётся для каждой частицы, тем менее точны для нас их импульс и скорость. То есть чем больше сжимается звезда, тем интенсивнее колеблются электроны, что и порождает давление наружу. Давление так называемого вырожденного газа электронов не даёт веществу звезды окончательно сколапсировать. Так образуется белый карлик.
