Первые аппараты по сути представляли собой закреплённую на пружинах ручку, которая выводила линии на раскручиваю вся рулоне бумаги.

Когда начиналось землетрясение, ручка тряслась, и линия на бумаге отражала интенсивность толчков. В результате получалась так называемая сесть матраса.

В наши дни пользуются геофонд внутри катушки индуктивности, которая закреплена на пружинах.

Стоит случиться землетрясению, как пружина начинает колебаться: катушка опускается и поднимается вдоль магнита, от чего появлятся то, с помощью тока и записывается сейс матраса.

Чтобы получить трёхмерное представление о сейсмических волнах, используют три катушки, каждая из которых ориентирована по одному из направлений.
