Это система относительного большинства с одним победителем. Здесь нет никакого необходимого минимума. Кандидату, чтобы выиграть, нужно просто набрать больше голосов, чем другие. Этот принцип вероятно известен ещё со времён античности.

По той же схеме с XIV века проходят выборы в английскую палату общин. Она применяется и в наши дни. Её используют 44 страны мира, 30 из них - бывшие британские колонии. США также некогда были британской колонией. По той же схеме почти во всех штатах выбирают представителей в коллегию выборщиков.

Однако эта система несовершенна. Если выбирать таким методом представителей в парламент, то и дело возникает ситуация, в которой большая часть страны не голосовала за партию, которая получает основную власть. За последние 100 лет уже 21 раз большинство в британском парламенте получала одна партия. Хотя большинство избирателей за неё голосовало лишь дважды.
