Но начинается всё с браха сом. Это уникальные наноразмерные частицы диаметром около 0,5 микрометра, похожие чем-то на футбольный мяч с дырками. Их производят из всех насекомых, только цикадки. Затем, чтобы покрыть этими частицами своё тело или кладку яиц.

Рахо-сомы известны с пятидесятых годов. В основном считается, что они могут помочь сделать поверхность супер гидрофобной, то есть отталкивающей воду. Но за ними стоит кое-что ещё: структура браха настолько сложна, что она способствует снижению отражения света на 94%.

В природе впервые обнаружен такой механизм для самих цикадок. Такая геометрия является уже не защитой от намокания, как можно было считать ранее, а защитой от хищников. Мантия невидимка.

Структура бхо-сом с такими размерами позволяет им делать две вещи: во-первых, поглощать ультрафиолетовый свет, что сокращает их видимость для хищников, птиц или рептилий. А во-вторых, рассеивать видимый свет.
