Этим первым растением может стать маленький, но невероятно выносливый мох сентри кани нерви с родом и с пустыней махав. Этот мох, как тихоходка среди растений, он не просто выживает, но и процветает в экстремальных условиях, напоминающих марсианские. Включая низкие температуры, радиацию и отсутствие воды, его адаптивные способности выглядят примерно так: мох выдерживает замораживание при -80° на протяжении 5 лет, а при -196° в жидком азоте — месяц.

И после таких испытаний мох оживает и продолжает расти, чем доказывает свою жизнестойкость. На Марсе средние температуры под -60°, на равнинах минимальные до -150°. Так что выжить мох мог бы, но большей проблемой будет не мороз, а сухость. Неизбежно при таких температурах.

Но у мха есть ответ на эту угрозу: мох показал, что он может успешно регидрироваться после высушивания за 20 секунд. Он способен вернуть 80% своей влаги.
