В настоящее время большая часть водорода получается из метана, что сопровождается значительными выбросами углекислого газа. Одной из альтернатив могут стать водородные электролизёры, работающие на возобновляемых источниках энергии.

Для электролиза воды в промышленных масштабах нужны катализаторы, которые обычно делают из редких и дорогих элементов, таких как иридий и платина. Иридий прекрасно подходит для анодов в таких электролизёрах. Это один из самых редких элементов на земле.

Но недавно группу учёных предложило оригинальное решение: они разработали новый катализатор для электролиза воды, который не требует иридия. Ключевой инновацией стал процесс ламинации, при котором части катализатора заменяются водой и гидроксид-ионными группами, что делает его стабильным и активным в агрессивных кислых средах.

Исследователи использовали распространённый оксид кобальта, вольфрама в качестве основного материала. В результате ламинации оксид вольфрама заменялся водой и гидроксид-ионов.
