Без кислорода нашему телу никак не обойтись. В ходе его реакции с глюкозой образуются молекулы АТФ; они обеспечивают клетки энергии. Насколько интенсивно нужно дышать, мозг понимает с помощью так называемых хеморецепторов, чувствительных к углекислому газу. Такие есть вместе с разветвлением сонных артерий и в стволе головного мозга.

Когда в крови возрастает содержание углекислого газа, повышается её кислотность. Считается, что именно на этом строится механизм обратной связи, который служит для регуляции дыхания. Углекислый газ появляется с той же скоростью, с какой расходуется кислород, и повышение кислотности сообщает мозгу, что CO2 накопилось слишком много, а значит, кислород заканчивается и пора начинать дышать.
