Периодические цикады - это уникальные насекомые, у которых жизненный цикл составляет либо 13 лет, либо 17. Так выводок номер 19 в Штатах выползает на поверхность для размножения, причём сразу все особи выводка один раз в 13 лет.

Цикады активные всего 6 недель. За это время они откладывают яйца, а затем погибают. Яйца вылупляются в это же лето, а затем потомки проводят почти 100% своей жизни все последующие 13 лет под землёй в статусе нимф.

Вот так выглядит карта распространения выводка 19. Ищите голубой цвет. Следующий его выход в этом году. А если вы присмотритесь, то увидите, что выводок 13 с циклом в 17 лет, отмеченный коричневым, тоже выползает в следующий раз в этом году. В последний раз совпадение циклов двух выводков происходило в начале XIX века, и надо сказать, это запомнилось.
