К апрелю 1720 стоимость акций, которые закупил Ньютон, удвоилась, и он их продал. Но акции росли дальше, и уже в июне он купил новый пакет акций. Когда стоимость прошла свой пик и акции начали дешеветь, Ньютон решил от них не избавляться и, напротив, закупил ещё.

Он считал, что они достаются ему за бесценок, но вверх они уже не пошли. Ньютон потерял почти треть своего состояния. Учёный не предвидел такого результата, ведь по его собственным словам, он мог просчитать движение небесных тел, но не человеческое безумие.
