Мощное землетрясение измеряют по шкале магнитуд. Для человека ощутимы землетрясения примерно в миллиард раз слабее, чем самые мощные, зафиксированные за историю наблюдений. По этой причине шкала магнитуд логарифмическая: увеличением на единицу обозначают десятикратное усиление мощности землетрясения.

Толчки магнитудой меньше 2,5 для человека не ощутимы. Таких за год происходят миллионы, и фиксируют их только фоновые измерения. Люди, выше шести, могут пострадать, здания — но таких гораздо меньше, всего несколько сотен в год по всей планете.

Великая чилийское землетрясение 1960 года — самое мощное из зафиксированных; его магнитуда составила 9,5. Из-за него погибли от одного до 6,000 человек, а общий ущерб оценили больше чем в 400 миллионов долларов США.
