Вот простенький образец устройства такого типа. Он умеет складывать два числа, если прокрутить чёрное колёсико, а потом прокрутить белое в ту же сторону. Серое колёсико покажет сумму этих вращений.

Вот для сравнения цифровой механический компьютер для сложения чисел в двоичной системе: 0 + 0 = 0, 0 + 1 = 1, 1 + 1 = 2.

На примере этих двух устройств хорошо видна разница между аналоговыми и цифровыми компьютерами. Аналоговые компьютеры работают с непрерывным диапазоном входных и выходных данных, а цифровые только с дискретными значениями.

Какое-то физическое воплощение, например, насколько повернулось колёсико. Цифровые же в работе используют символы, такие как единицы. Если ответ два, в цифровом компьютере не будет ничего, что физически больше единицы.
