И в 1996 информатик Джордж Волкман запустил широкомасштабные поиски простых чисел Мерса на добровольных началах. ГИМС. Работа по вычислениям распределяется по множеству компьютеров, и любой может предложить мощность своей техники в помощь математикам.

Можно сказать, что проект себя очень хорошо показал: в его рамках обнаружены 17 новых простых чисел Мерса. 15 из них были самыми большими из известных на тот момент.

Что самое интересное, если новое число найдёт ваш компьютер, то вас вшт в качестве первооткрывателя этого числа, и ваше имя попадёт в один список с именами величайших математиков всех времён. За первое найденное простое число длиной в миллиард знаков даже обещают награду 250.000 долларов. [музыка]
