В 2012 году Феликс Баумгартнер поднялся в стратосферу на шаре с гелием и прыгнул с парашютом с высоты 39 км над уровнем моря. За 40 секунд он достиг конечной скорости больше 1300 км/ч, на четверть больше скорости звука. Баумгартнер стал первым человеком, который преодолел звуковой барьер в свободном падении. Ему удалось это сделать благодаря тому, что на большой высоте атмосфера разрежена.

Сопротивление воздуха прямо пропорционально плотности воздуха, в котором падает объект. А на такой высоте плотность воздуха в 60 раз ниже, чем на уровне моря. По мере падения Баумгартнера его конечная скорость становилась ниже с ростом плотности атмосферы. На высоте 25 км над уровнем моря он падал уже со скоростью всего 200 км/ч, и тогда раскрыл парашют.
