Гораздо более опасны так называемые снежные доски. Если верхний слой снега успел прочно слипнуться и сформировать нечто вроде доски или плиты, в движение приходит сразу большой участок снежного покрова. Вероятность схода такой лавины зависит от крутизны склона. При 2° и менее градусов силы тяжести недостаточно, чтобы стащить снег вниз.

При наклоне более 50° сход лавины маловероятен. На такой поверхности вряд ли накопится достаточное количество осадков; излишки будут сходить небольшими лавинами, и снежная доска так и не образуется. 75% сходов досок происходит на склонах под углом от 34 до 45 градусов. Для сравнения, большинство черных горнолыжных трасс имеют склон 30°, а самые крутые черные трассы — около 40°.
