В общем, если у нейрона будет возможность жить дальше, он должен ей пользоваться. Но что тогда этим долгожителем делать с накапливающимся мусором?

Особенная угроза для нейронов - это агрегация белков, которые могут слипаться в токсичные комплексы и вызывать нейродегенеративные заболевания, такие как болезнь Альцгеймера или Паркинсона. То есть у них и мусор, ещё не совсем похожий на мусор остальных клеток.

На помощь им приходят клетки микроглии, которые можно назвать чистильщиками мозга. Интересно, что хоть они не относятся к иммунной системе, но функции выполняют довольно похожие: могут и на вредоносные частицы напасть, и тот же мусор вывести за пределы мозга.

Но недавно выяснилось, что они ещё и умеют подсоединять к самим нейронам. Между ними возникают очень тонкие трубочки, по этим трубочкам перекачиваются вещества и клеточные компоненты. Нейроны сбрасывают мусор агрегации токсичных белков, микроглии, а от них получают подзарядку в виде митохондрий, энергетических клеточных заводов.
