Когда хордовые выбрались из воды на берег, эти первопроходцы стали предками земноводных, а затем и всех современных рептилий, млекопитающих и птиц. Но у всего есть своя цена. Животные, которые вышли на сушу, потеряли одну из самых удивительных способностей — регенерацию.

Низшие позвоночные, к которым относятся амфибии и рыбы, хорошо регенерируют. Аксолотль, например, может восстановить не только конечности, но и сердца, и даже части головного мозга. Но рептилии, птицы и млекопитающие лишены этой возможности. Разве что ящерицы способны отращивать потерянный хвост, и то с ограничениями.

Остальные наземные позвоночные не могут самовосстанавливающиеся и увеличение размеров тела.
