В страдавние времена операторы просто закрывали половину объектива чем-нибудь непрозрачным и снимали только на открытую часть пленки. Затем ее отматывали назад, а заслонку передвигали, прикрывая использованную сторону и снимая недостающую часть сцены. Главное - не двигать камеру и красиво спрятать стык в самом кадре.

Этот простой метод позволял добиваться удивительных результатов. Вот, например, театр Бастера Китона, 1921 год, где Китон одновременно играет и целый оркестр, и чопорных зрителей, и артистов на сцене, и даже... Ой, нет, вернемся в наши дни.
