До недавнего времени учёные не понимали, как небольшие млекопитающие справляются с таким экстримом. Но недавние исследования показали, что ключ к этому кроется в изменениях в сердечном белке под названием сердечный тронин. Один этот белок играет важную роль в способности сердца связывать ионы кальция во время сокращения у млекопитающих.

В трапани есть две особые аминокислоты, которые временно изменяются под воздействием гормонов, вроде адреналина, высвобождаемого, если организм находится в состоянии стресса или нагрузки. Это изменение позволяет мышечным волокнам высвобождать ионы кальция быстрее после сокращения, тем самым позволяя сердцу расслабляться быстрее после удара и соответственно стучать чаще.
