В атмосфере Земли существует невидимый поток частиц, убегающих от Земли в космос. Его впервые заметили ещё в поздних шестидесятых. Корабли, пролетавшие над полюсами, назвали это явление Полярным ветром, и вот сейчас его удалось измерить и объяснить.

Представьте себе, в нашей атмосфере, конкретно в ионосфере, есть восходящий поток ионов. Эти ионы достигают таких скоростей, которых достаточно для преодоления гравитации, и они улетучиваются. Атмосфера в этих участках рдеет. Если бы эти потоки были горячими, а в ионосфере это возможно, то тогда всё было бы ясно: горячий газ обеспечивает высокие скорости своим частицам, ну и часть из них улетучивается.

Вот только измерения показали, что эти ионные потоки не обладают достаточной для такого процесса температурой. Встречайте виновника этой потери — ампибиполярное электрическое поле.
