Slash and Burn | Live Free or Die

It should go back down. There's so much green around it. Yeah, got the fire working for us. Looks pretty good up here. God, we just burnt like 400 square feet or some. Wow, this is the art of slashing burn.

Whenever we move into a new area to terrace it out, to transform it into a series of steps, we first have to clear everything that's in the way. We do that by chopping and burning stuff. Tony and Amelia live on just one acre of land in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They've got to make every inch of their property count by any means necessary.

This is how you tame a mountain: knocking it all down, starting anew. This is a steep region. The steeper the land, the cheaper the land. When I bought this piece of land, I had like almost no money. So for 8 years, we've been taking this type of land and then turning it into this type of land by slashing and burning.

A burning fire—90% of our property has been brought under domestication, and this is that last 10% that we're getting into here. Throwing more debris on this thing and keep slashing and burning and get that mother burnt! All right, we're clear.

This looks like it might burn for a while longer. I'll let that burn. Yeah, I'm getting pretty hungry. Let's get the hell out of here. I guess if we keep an eye on the fire, I don't think it's going to get out of hand at this point. Okay.
