Цвет светодиодов определяется совсем не их оболочкой. Вот здесь, например, оболочка бесцветная, а свет красный. За цвет отвечает сама электроника, оболочка просто помогает нам отличать светодиоды друг от друга.

В 1962 году инженер из General Electric, Ньютон, представил первый светодиод видимого спектра. Он излучал тускло-красный свет. Несколько лет спустя в Монса создали зелёный светодиод. Следующие 30 лет только эти два цвета и были, а потому светодиоды применяли разве что в разных индикаторах, калькуляторах и часах.

Не хватало синего. Смешав с ним красный и зелёный, можно было бы получить белый и все остальные цвета, что открыло бы дорогу освещению всех возможных оттенков: от ламп в помещениях, экранов смартфонов и компьютеров до телевизоров и билбордов. Но синего добиться было сложнее всего.
