Если выстрелить строго вверх, пуля будет замедляться по мере того, как её кинетическая энергия переходит в гравитационную. На высоте до 3 км она остановится и начнёт падать. Это то же самое, что сбросить пулю с очень высокого небоскрёба. В полёте она будет болтаться и переворачиваться, а значит, испытает более сильное сопротивление воздуха, чем на пути вверх, и не сможет набрать столько же энергии, сколько получила при выстреле.

А значит, что приземлится она уже с меньшей скоростью, чем вылетела из оружия. Если же выстрелить не строго вверх, пуля будет гораздо опаснее. В максимальной точке траектории только вертикальный компонент скорости будет равен нулю, горизонтальная скорость сохранится, а вращение, которое придаёт пуле нарез ствола, позволяет ей лететь узким концом вперёд.

На пути вниз пуля успевает снова добрать значительную часть первоначальной скорости. Известно о сотнях случаев по всему миру, когда люди погибали от пуль, выпущенных в воздух.
