Apple Coming Out With Speech Recognition?

Hey guys, this is Mids. One of our subscribers asked us the question: Do you think that Apple will come out with a speech recognition software for the Mac that comes directly with it?

So basically, I believe that it is possible that they would come out with a more, um, user-friendly speech recognition software. It's highly doubtful that they themselves would take the time to make a program that recognizes your voice and allows you to type text. I did have a program on my, um, Linux computer at one point that, um, some guy who my dad worked with at one point made.

That was a text typing thingy for Linux that he never released, but he wanted me to test it, and it wasn't too good. I had a program like that on Windows that was actually very nice, but it didn't work the way it should. Basically, sometimes it typed a phrase twice. So, my answer to that question is no, I don't think Apple will come out with something that totally lets you type text and stuff.

But if they did, here's how they would probably do it. If you ever noticed in any application, there's a Services tab, and you can use all these great Services, um, sorry to, um, help you. So there might be another service called speed tracking, and when you open that up, another application would open up or something. So that's, um, how I think they might do it is through this Services feature.

Another, um, thing is that Apple already does have some kind of cruddy speech recognition thing. So if you open up system preferences, the thing is that this doesn't customize itself to your voice, so it’s not too good. But it's called speech recognition. If we take a look, it only lets you enter commands called speakable items.

So if I say, "What time is it?" it doesn't actually work too well. Normally, you have to lower the microphone sensitivity. "What time is it? What time is it?" Okay, so it's not going to work. So basically, this is not good at all, and it only lets you, um, say stuff for, um, their built-in commands.

I guess it does allow you to do a bunch of commands like "Tell me a joke," but they're all built in. It can't get words that you say and understand them—only things that are programmed into it. So ultimately, if they did it, they might also build it into this thing, and it would be instead of text-to-speech; it would be speech-to-text, probably.

So that is what my position is on Apple creating some kind of speech recognition software. I really doubt they would do it. Um, and another question he asked is do I know of any speech recognition software that's like speech-to-text for the Mac?

I do not personally, but if you would like me to do some research for you, I can look, um, one up. So, thanks for watching Mids And1, subscribe, and goodbye.
