Поверхность Европы почти вся покрыта толстым водяным льдом. Красно-коричневые области, если изучить их спектрометром, выдают неоднозначный сигнал. Это могут быть гидратированные соли, серная кислота и даже бактерии. Чтобы сказать точнее, нужно больше данных.

Недавние эксперименты лаборатории реактивного движения показали, что белая морская соль под интенсивным излучением окрашивается в коричневый красный цвет, как на Европе. Под поверхностью спутника плещется целый соленый океан глубиной может быть километров 100. Если их догадки верны, то воды там в два раза больше, чем на Земле.

Эта вода должна быть отвечает за геологическую активность, из-за которой поверхность разглаживается и обновляется.
