Camera Trap Captures Surprise Treetop Proposal | National Geographic

So, I was down in Panama doing research in the canopy of the rainforests. I knew that my boyfriend, Dan, was coming to visit me in a couple of weeks, so I was actually really excited. [Music] I called him up and I told him that he would not only be able to visit me but he would be able to climb up into the tree with me.

I stopped for a second and I said, "Wait, really?" He got so excited. I was still, he like started crying a little bit. I knew that was the moment that I had to propose. Long story short, I get down to Panama. He picked out a tree, and he was going to take me. In order to get both of us up there, I had to climb up the tree, set his rope, and while I was up there, I set up one of my camera traps.

He was really lingering up there for a while, and I thought, "Gosh, what's taking him so long?" Finally, we start going up, and it was just such a magical moment. It was a really, really tall tree, so once we got up there, you could see all the way around. Just as I was about to go into my little proposal, it was like, "Okay, this is it. This is gonna be the moment."

He surprised me and started proposing to me first, you know, asking if I wouldn't like to adventure for the rest of our lives together, kind of thing. I definitely didn't think he was going to propose up there at the same time, but I really kept my composure and just let him go ahead. He said, "Of course," and then he was like, "And as a matter of fact, I also have something to ask you."

I was like, "Can you do?" I gave him my little speech, and there we were. That's where we got engaged. [Music]

What do you do if, like, for example, you wake up one morning and a fly has laid a bunch of eggs in your eyeball and there's maggots growing in them?
