Когда учёные проводили исследование шестнадцати типов грызунов на предмет cd1, они были крайне удивлены, обнаружив, что голые землекопы утратили целый ряд генов cd1. Соответственно, у них отсутствуют и белки cd1, а значит, и вся иммунная система голых землекопов работает нестандартно. Более ранние исследования иммунной системы голых землекопов показали отсутствие естественных тек киллеров, обычно отвечающих за вычищение заражённых и опухолевых клеток.

Один из генов cd1, cd1 D, отвечает за появление естественных те киллеров, и сейчас становится очевидно, почему и как вся эта цепочка иммунного ответа не работает в принципе. Однако это означает лишь то, что иммунный ответ у голых землекопов работает как-то иначе. Так что на данный момент голые землекопы, мало того что заинтриговали нас, ещё по одному пункту, ну и предложили нам исследовать иные способы работы иммунитета.
