Это так называемый лайман Альфа. Лес ранние объекты Вселенной излучали Альфа. Это линия первой Бальмеровской серии водорода перехода на первую электронную оболочку водорода. Линия лаймановской серии водорода распространяется по расширяющейся Вселенной от объектов, которые её излучают.

Поглощала вещество Вселенной. Но поскольку это вещество расширяется, то поглощение происходило на разных красных смещениях. Вот как вы сейчас видите на этой схеме. Когда мы наблюдаем спектры ранних объектов Вселенной, поглощение линии Лайман Альфа происходит каждый раз на разной частоте.

Потому что из-за красного смещения эта линия каждый раз по-разному удлиняется. Мы наблюдаем вместо одной линии поглощения Лайман Альфа в холодном веществе расширяющейся Вселенной целую серию таких линий. Это и есть Лайман Альфа-лес.
