Больше всего людей от снежных лавин погибло в декабре 1916 года. Тогда бушевала Первая мировая война. Бои, среди прочего, шли в Доломитовых Альпах на севере Италии. Тысячам итальянских и австро-венгерских солдат лавина разом снесла все австрийские бараки близ горы Мармолада. Под толщей снега погибли не меньше 275 человек.

Однако это было не самое страшное. Обе стороны поняли, что снег может стать оружием. По заснеженным склонам над лагерями ударили артиллерийские залпы. К подножию покатились лавины одна за другой. Всего за несколько дней они унесли от 6 до 10 000 жизней.
