Видимо, светлячки на юго-востоке Азии все отлично ладят настолько, что начинают синхронно мигать. У каждого по отдельности есть собственная любимая частота, но они подстраиваются друг под друга, и сотни, даже тысячи огоньков вспыхивают в один и тот же миг.

Кике создал отличную модель. Поначалу вспышки происходят беспорядочно, но можно включить режим взаимодействия. В рамках моделей Рамо это будет значить, что каждый огонёк влияет на все другие. В компьютерной модели Кейса светлячки влияют только на ближайших соседей. Насекомое видит рядом вспышку и немного подгоняет свои внутренние часики, чтобы в следующий раз вспыхнуть чуть раньше.

Поразительное во всем этом, что пусть взаимодействия происходит только на небольшом расстоянии, спустя некоторое время огоньки начинают расходиться волнами. Подождём ещё чуть-чуть — и вот они все мерцают одновременно.
