Принцип действия инерциального реактора отличается от токамаков. Напомню, что в NIF это и самые крупные в мире экспериментальные термоядерные установки. Топливо заключено в карбоновую капсулу миллиметр в диаметре. Внутри нее находится криогенная дейтериево-третий смесь.

Капсулы заключена в цилиндрический холераум. На холераум управляют 192 лазера, выдавая примерно 2 мегаджоуля энергии в импульсах с пиками в 500. Оболочка поглощает излучение лазеров, разогревается и переизлучает энергию в рентгеновском диапазоне. Поверхность капсулы испаряется.

Ударная волна сжимает топливо в полтора раза сильнее, чем давление в центре солнца, а температура становится в три раза больше, чем в центре солнца. Слияние ядер дейтерий и третий вызывают выброс нейтронов и альфа-частиц, то есть по факту ядер гелия. Альфа-частицы распространяются внутри капсулы, добавляя к внешней энергии лазеров свою энергию, тем самым внося вклад в развитие горения.
