2,5 млрд лет назад цено бактерии начали наполнять окружающее пространство кислородом. Железо вступало в реакцию с ним, а образовавшийся осадок копил на дне океана. По случайности, кислород заодно отравляет на бактерии, которые его производили.

Считается, что через какое-то время их стало так мало, что содержание кислорода снизилось, и оксид железа оседать перестал. Затем цианобактерии снова начали распространяться, и всё повторилось заново.

Большую часть железа обнаруживают в слоях метаморфической породы железистого кварцита, также известного как джеспилит. Эти слои формировались в период, когда цено бактерий было много и они насыщали кислородом. Именно поэтому отсюда и добывают основной объём железа на земле.

Здесь невероятно высока концентрация оксида железа — до 60% от общего веса.
