Синая палочка — очень распространённая грамположительная бактерия. Уже умеет разлагать некоторые виды пластика, но она также обладает ещё одной особенностью: в гено модифицированном виде её споры умеют выдерживать высокие температуры, такие, при которых производится термопластичный, очень прочный полиуретан, до 135°.

Идея учёных заключается в том, чтобы внедрить споры модифицированной синой палочки в сам пластик во время его производства. Пока пластик, точнее, изделия из него, находятся в эксплуатации, бактерии как бы спят. Они пластик не трогают, но стоит пластику попасть в компост, в землю, на свалку, так бактерии активизируются и начинают пластик поедать.

Достаточно добавлять в пластик примерно 1% спор бактерий по массе, чтобы после попадания в компост они перерабатывали 90% пластика в течение 5 месяцев.
