The #USConstitution and founding of the presidency
How exactly did the founders of the United States first decide on how to choose the first president?
Hi, I'm Leah from KH Academy. We're celebrating this President's Day by taking a look at how the US presidency is shaped in the US Constitution.
There are some who want the president to be chosen by Congress. There are others who really push for direct election, that the people would all vote directly for president.
It's really only after weeks and weeks of debate that the Electoral College emerges as a compromise. The idea was that the electors were representatives of the people they were voting for to be president.
Whoever got the most electoral votes would be president, and whoever got the second most votes would be vice president. But we know that's not how the vice president is chosen today.
So how has the Electoral College, the right to vote, and the process for electing a president and vice president evolved throughout decades of amendments to the Constitution?
