Поэтому пытаться надышаться воздухом перед погружением далеко не лучшая идея. Гипервентиляция приводит к резкому снижению содержания углекислого газа, из-за чего повышается pH крови. Но содержание кислорода в ней на самом деле не растёт. Оно зависит от того, сколько во вдыхаемом воздухе кислорода и от количества эритроцитов.

Если в крови изначально щелочная среда, то для того чтобы хеморецепторы отреагировали на повышение кислотности и мозг дал команду дышать, потребуется больше углекислого газа. А значит, и кислорода. С этого момента израсходуется больше, вплоть до того, что мозгу перестанет его хватать, и человек потеряет сознание ещё до того, как хеморецепторы успеют сработать.
