В отдельном атоме каждый электрон занимает определённый энергетический уровень. Эти уровни можно представить себе как отдельные места на стадионе. Всем атомам элемента, пока они далеко друг от друга, доступны одинаковые энергетические уровни. Но в твёрдом состоянии вещества атомы оказываются рядом, и происходит нечто занятное.

На электроны на внешних орбиталях, помимо заряда ядра их собственного атома, начинают воздействовать заряды ядер всех соседних атомов. Происходит уширение энергетических уровней. Вместо идентичных у нас получается целый набор, близко расположенных, но отдельных уровней.

Энергетическая зона, самая высокая зона, содержащая электроны, называется валентной, но над ней есть ещё одна зона — проводимости. В проводниках валентная зона заполнена частично. Если добавить тепла, электроны смогут перепрыгнуть на соседние пустые места. Если воздействовать на них электрическим полем, они будут прыгать в определённом направлении, то есть формировать ток.
