Плутон открыли в 1930 году и провозгласили девятой планетой. Но вскоре выяснилось, что он особенный. Решительное слово в этом вопросе прозвучало 5 января 2005 года. Исследователи открыли в поясе Койпера Эрису, объект, примерно на 30% превышающий Плутон по массе.

До этого уже обнаруживали похожие массивные объекты, и предполагалось, что вскоре станет известно о других. Предстояло учесть выбор: записать множество небесных тел в список планет или вычеркнуть из него Плутон. В этом решении было принято. Появилось новое определение планеты.

Планетами стали считаться объекты, отвечающие трём критериям. Во-первых, они должны обращаться вокруг звезды. Во-вторых, благодаря силе собственного тяготения, иметь сферическую или близкую к сферической форму. И в-третьих, эти объекты должны доминировать на своей орбите и расчистить себе путь.

Первым двум требованиям Плутон соответствует, а третьему нет. Поэтому мы вернулись к списку планет, в которые не входит Плутон.
