С одной стороны, у Венеры нет тектоники плит, которая на Земле отвечает за наш земной довольно интенсивный вулканизм. С другой, в атмосфере Венеры присутствует аномальное количество диоксида серы. Периодически обнаруживаются довольно горячие зоны на поверхности, а также наблюдается изменение самой поверхности рядом с некоторыми из тысяч древних вулканов.

Предположим, есть жерло вулкана, и оно изменило свою форму. Логично, что в первую очередь захочется объяснить это деятельностью самого вулкана. Планетология посчитала, что подобных данных достаточно, чтобы приписать Венере порядка 40 извержений в год. Но новая работа вносит корректировку в эту оценку.

Осталась гипотеза вулканической активности. Она лучше всех объясняла наличие продолговатых и извилистых образований в десятки километров. Те должны быть ничем иным, как свежими потоками лавы. Судя по размерам потоков лавы, в них выбрасывается от 4 до 6 кубометров в год.
