Нобелевская премия по физике отправится за экспериментальные методы генерации атос импульсов. Перемещение и вращение атомов занимают фемто секунды — это 10 в минус 15 степени секунды, квадриллион доли секунды. Попробовав отследить перемещение электронов в оболочках атомов, мы поймём, что нужны ещё более мелкие промежутки — десятки и сотни атосекунд.

В одной секунде столько атосекунд, сколько секунд прошло с момента возникновения Вселенной. В 1987 году ан лю Илья работала над излучением инфракрасного диапазона в аргоне. Оказалось, что в этом случае даже длинные волны света могут вызывать генерацию коротких импульсов.

Электроны, накачанные инфракрасным светом, после рекомбинации возбуждают гармоники более высоких порядков. Получаемые вспышки длятся как раз сотни атосекунд. Все девяностые учёные потратили на то, чтобы понять механизм этого явления.
