Setting Up Camp in a Tree | The Great Human Race

less than 1m read
·Nov 11, 2024

2.4 million years ago, before humans had weapons or fire, Homo habilis retreated into the safety of trees to escape predators at night. Sounds almost like a hyena.

"We have like minutes left really. I think it's high enough."

"I mean, are you stable though? It looks really unstable."

"Yeah, I mean, this is kind of crazy. We've got to be over 30 ft. We might be 40. I can do it."

"Ready? Be careful!"

"Oh my God, nice job!"

"Oh my gosh, what do you think? Look at this! Look at this!"

"Oh my God, Bill, that was rough. I mean, that was a lot of spikes."

"To be able to use these tools, the same tools our ancestors did, and accomplish something such as this, it's overwhelming."

"We've got to get some beds set up up here. All right, we got to move though. Try and get some of this up and see how much I can carry."

"You get it?"

"I'm almost there. I'm almost got it. Okay, look out. Take it!"

"All right, great! Nice job! Okay, don't knock me over."

"All right, put this here. It's hard to get a foothold here. When you do, it's up quick. Thankfully, we got a full moon. It's the only reason we could still work this late; otherwise, we'd be in big trouble."

"We get up here not a moment too soon."

"Yeah, night."
