А теперь представьте себе, что древнейшая бактерия, у которой имеются тилакоиды, то есть которая производила кислород во время фотосинтеза, имеет возраст 1 млрд 750 млн лет. Именно эту бактерию недавно нашли в Австралии. Она была, разумеется, частью колонии, частью циано бактериального мата.

Она прекрасно сохранилась, и в ней можно разглядеть продолговатые структуры, которые собственно и определили как тилакоиды. Если бы не было тилакоидов, то мы бы говорили о более простом варианте синтеза, доступном бактериям. Получается, что мы довольно точно определяли даты возникновения и фотосинтеза, и кислородной катастрофы.

Считается, что процесс накопления кислорода начался 2,8 млрд лет назад и за 400 млн лет довёл атмосферу Земли до катастрофического для тех организмов состояния. Так что нам нужны находки как минимум на 1 млрд лет древнее. Последний будет сложно.
