Учёные знали, что мед фармин оказывает позитивное влияние не только на диабет, но и помогает замедлить старение у некоторых животных, червей и грызунов. Однако до недавнего времени эффективность его побочных эффектов для приматов оставалась загадкой, которую и попытались решить китайцы.

Они на протяжении 40 месяцев наблюдали за двенадцатью пожилыми макака, которые каждый день получали стандартную дозу метформина. 40 месяцев обезьян — это в пересчёте на человечески примерно 13 лет.

Учёные тщательно изучали состояние их мозга и других органов и тканей, используя передовую вычислительную модель для определения биологического возраста тканей. Биологический возраст может сильно отличаться от, так сказать, календарного в ту или иную сторону; он отражает степень молодости организма.

Результаты были такими: возрастная деградация у обезьян, принимавших метформин, происходила гораздо медленнее. Их нейронная активность была примерно сопоставима с уровнем активности обезьян на 6 лет моложе. А 6 лет с обезьяньего — это как 18 человеческих лет.
