Battling the Current | Primal Survivor

Finally, I know I'm approaching the waterfalls because the rush of water is becoming deafening. Here they are, amazing! Standing this close to such thundering power is breathtaking. When the fish migrate up the river to spawn, many gather near the base of the falls looking for a way up the rapids, but they don't stay here for long.

I'm going to have to work quickly and carefully, avoiding any overfished or endangered species, to get the best catch I can for the village. My first step is to position my fish traps. These are woven by the fishermen in the village, who take responsibility for making all their own equipment. The size of the nets and style of trap are carefully adjusted to single out specific species of fish.

This is a pretty good-sized side channel. The main river, in all this raging water, is being channeled into this small spot—a perfect place to set a fish trap. There's all that current coming through; the fish will get funneled in through this cone, and they can't escape the trap.

The cars are going so fast you can barely put your feet on the rocks below. They try to keep from getting sucked away. I need to create a frame to hold the trap in position, but in these waters, nothing is easy. Dean, pretty solid? Yeah, I just wait and see.
