Road Trip to the Sawtooth Mountains | National Geographic

  • [Sofia] Nature and family have always existed within the same worlds for me. My name is Sofia Jaramillo. I'm a National Geographic photographer. I'm going on a road trip with my brother Lucas.

  • Good to see you!

  • [Sofia] To a place that was really important to us as kids. I grew up visiting the Sawtooths here in Idaho pretty often. My godparents used to run Redfish Lake Lodge, so I spent almost every summer here growing up with my brother, and I'm really excited to go on this road trip with him.

  • Oh nice, you have KnowYourDrive?

  • Yeah, so we have emergency roadside service if we need it. I think my brother is the sweetest human. Perfect. (laughing) He's got a really, really huge heart, and I think that there needs to be more of him in the world. Do you remember coming here when we were kids?

  • I do. Such a beautiful spot.

  • [Sofia] I certainly long for road trips.

  • The Pickle Palace. Those fried pickles the baddest. I'll be whipping my hair on that big green chair.

  • [Sofia] Road trips are when life is unfolding. That's when you have to surrender to the experiences that are gonna happen in front of you.

  • Cool.

  • [Sofia] My family is a huge reason that I'm a National Geographic photographer. They were the ones that introduced me to the outdoors and taught me how to love the outdoors and be in the outdoors. I learned that there's a lot of incredible things in our backyard within hours of where we live and that you don't have to travel around the world to find beauty. Photographing a place that was such a big part of who I am was such a powerful experience. I'm always gonna remember this for the rest of my life, and it'll be really nice to have those photos and look back on them. And I think it's always worth a road trip to come back to this place to reconnect.
