Гадюки используют встроенные тепловизоры. У них рядом с ноздрями есть инфракрасные сенсоры, с помощью которых они умеют отслеживать минимальные изменения температуры и так выслеживать свою добычу. Это означает, что у гадюки должны быть какие-то усилители сигнала.

Когда множество отдельных сенсоров подают определённые сигналы, то реакция воспринимающих их нейронов меняется. Учёные определили некоторую точку бифуркации, то есть пограничного состояния системы, разделяющего два разных режима её работы.

В одном режиме сигналы нерегулярные и редки, а в другом регулярные и частые. Именно около этой точки мозг змеи как будто считывает данные с каждого отдельного сенсора, усредняя их, и получает одну общую точную картину. Именно тогда змея и находит свою добычу в кромешной тьме ночи.
