В 2014 году астрономам удалось засечь сверхновую — невероятно яркую смерть звезды. Один и тот же взрыв они наблюдали в четырёх местах. Дело в том, что между сверхновой и Землёй расположилась массивная галактика, искривляющая свет, и он, проходя по нескольким маршрутам, достигал Земли четыре раза одновременно.

Галактика послужила гравитационной линзой. Астрономы догадались, что свет от той сверхновой могут перенаправлять и другие галактики в кластере с разной массой и разным гравитационным потенциалом. А значит, свет будет доходить до Земли в разное время.

Тщательно простроив модель, они высчитали, что смогут увидеть ту же сверхновую через год — 11 декабря 2015. Как и ожидалось, астрономы снова её наблюдали.
